Public safety is one of the main duties of local government, and Highland has a number of committed sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, emergency medical staff, and other professionals who work every day to ensure that our community remains safe. We currently have a solid base, and it is our responsibility to protect it, to support those who carry out these services, and to keep making improvements in order to boost community safety.
Public safety doesn’t end with emergency response; it also involves prevention, preparedness, forming partnerships, and making sure that our neighborhoods remain safe places in which to live, work and raise families.
Supporting Measure “E” in 2026 is just one of the ways we can support our city’s public safety needs.
The Highland area has the advantage of a professional, committed law enforcement force, and the sheriff’s deputies there look after residents, answer calls, and build relationships within the community.
If I am a councilmember, I will support the resources necessary for effective policing and promote good relationships between the police and the residents; public safety is best achieved when the deputies know the community and the residents trust them.
I want to promote practical steps to improve traffic safety, such as tackling dangerous intersections, speeding, distracted driving, pedestrian safety, and risky road designs. We must use data and input from residents to identify and prioritize the areas that need improvement.

In a fire, in the case of a medical emergency or during a crisis, each second is important. Our firefighters and EMS workers offer essential services, usually attending to residents at the most difficult times.
I support the growing needs of staffing, equipment, training, and infrastructure to enable an effective fire and emergency medical response in our growing community. The growth comes at a cost and we have a duty to support them.

The fact of living in Highland involves sharing our distinctive natural environment, which at the same time presents challenges concerning wildlife, particularly in areas where the neighbourhoods adjoin open spaces.
Wildlife management plays an important role in ensuring public safety. It is necessary to assist residents in understanding how to safely coexist with local wildlife and to work with the relevant agencies whenever animals pose a threat to people, pets, or property. Through education, responsible management, and increased community awareness, dangerous encounters can be avoided. Everyone should feel safe when going to school, walking in our neighborhoods, or riding a bicycle.
It is necessary to maintain a sustained focus on public safety, which involves supporting the people who protect us, keeping essential infrastructure in good condition, taking residents’ views into account, and preparing for future challenges.
Highland is a wonderful place in which to live, a fact largely due to the high level of public safety. The aim is to protect and enhance what is currently working so that Highland may remain safe for future generations.
